Lake Simcoe Ice Fishing

Just a short one hour drive from the bustling Ontario metropolis of Toronto is an ice fishing heaven. World renowned Lake Simcoe offers up some of the finest ice fishing in the province of Ontario. Much closer than you think Lake Simcoe is a beehive of activity in the winter months.

Impressive in size Lake Simcoe is the 12th largest lake in the province. 30km long and 25km long at its widest point Lake Simcoe covers roughly 725 square kilometres. Joined by narrows at the north end of the lake it links up with Lake Couchiching. Orillia encompasses Simcoe at the north and stradles both lakes. Further to the south you’ll find one of the fastest growing cities in Ontario, Barrie. Located on Kempenfelt Bay Barrie is a hot spot year round for anglers and cottagers.

At the southern point of Lake Simcoe is probably its most famous area for anglers. Cooks Bay.Noted for its shallow areas and weed beds Cooks Bay is a hotspot for many Northern Pike anglers in the summer and fall months. Home to other popular fish species Simcoe is probably most famous for its trophy Smallmouth Bass fishing. Easy boating access to Cooks Bay can be found in many of the smaller towns like Gilford, Jackson’s Point and Keswick with hundreds of resorts, lodges and campsites abundant throughout the region.

During the winter ice fishing season these areas are just as popular with anglers as in the summer months. Bait shops are buzzing with activity as anglers head out onto the ice in the search of Whitefish, Walleye, Perch and Lake Trout. Many ice fishing operators offer daily and weekly ice hut rentals as well as transportation on and off the lake. Fishing licenses can also be obtained from most bait shops and outfitters. Are you a summer angler and don’t have any ice fishing gear? Not to worry. Many outfitters and ice hut rental operators will rent you the proper equipment for the day.

Lake Simcoe is in its own governing region and fishing regulations can be found here regarding open seasons and limits.

With its close access to many southern Ontario cities and its hearty fish population Lake Simcoe continually shows why it is one of the most favourite locations for anglers year round. This ice fishing season make the effort and enjoy a fabulous day out on the ice with your family and friends.
