When many of us think of the Muskellunge we automatically think of big open water. Not unlike many other Ontario fish species the Muskie is known to cover up an take shelter in the autumn months. With the change in seasons different tactics are needed when trying to land this mysterious fish.
In Ontario the most popular time for Muskie fishing is in the fall months, September and october. The cooling surface temperatures in these months ofter bring many of these larger fish closer to shore and in shallower water unlike the deeper cooler water they seek during the hot summer months.
Trolling during the summer months in deeper water is a effective tactic when the weather is hot but is less productive during the cooler chaning of the seasons.
For many anglers who shy away from summer muskie with the long ensuing trolling sessions it is a pleasant surprise to see how many anglers return in the fall switching tactics to casting techniques.
Casting for muskie in the fall for most is more enjoyable it seems and the excitement of working a large lure though the water such as a Bulldawg, Spinnerbait or Bucktail is a productive method of landing your trophy.
