Ontario's seasons are divided into the following 4 categories with a brief outline of each season:

  • Winter - December 21 to March 19

Winter brings cold. A blessing for those who after the autumn months yearn for the chance to ice fish on many of the thousands of frozen lakes. Snow is abundant especially in the northern regions and snowbelt areas. Southern regions can expect a mix of cold air with less prevalent snowfall on average years. The majority of the province will stay below 0°C and more northern regions can expect daytime temperature averages in the -10°C to -20°C. The farther north you venture the colder it becomes with average nightime temps dipping below -25°C. Exxtreme cold below these temperatures are common. The farther north you go the the colder and longer the winter becomes. It is not uncommon for lakes to have ice out as late as May. Warm clothing for the province is mandatory. A heavy coat, snowsuit, insulated coveralls, waterproof gloves and wool hats are the best bet for those experiencing ice fishing.
  • Spring - March 20 to June 20
Spring brings rain to most parts of Ontario as the ground warms and the coldfronts slowly pass. Daytome temperatures gradually rise during this time with the nights still remaining cool. Common daytime temperatures range from +5 - +20°C with nighttime temps remaining close to and above the freezing point in most northern locations. Windbreakers, medium coats, nylon pants are are popular with outdoorsmen this time of year
  • Summer - June 21 to September 21
Summer officially begins on June 21, but July and August are summer for most Ontarians. In summer, the weather is very warm in most parts of the country. In southern Ontario, daytime temperatures are normally above 20°C and can sometimes rise above 30°C.
  • Fall (also known as Autumn)- September 22 to December 20

The autumn season, or fall, as it's often called, begins in September. The weather cools and the leaves on many trees change colour and fall to the ground. It can also be very rainy at this time of year. In some parts of Ontario, especially northern regions, snow may begin to fall by late October. Average daytime temperatures are about 10°C to 12°C in most of the province. The autumn months are September, October and November.
