Other popular desinations such as Haliburton offer deep, crystal clear lakes abundant with lake trout, brook trout, smallmouth bass, northern pike and whitefish. Fishermen using boats are the norm in this area but many anglers like to explore the tranquil water in canoes or kayaks. Directly north of Ontario's largest city Toronto, resides Lake Simcoe. A popular vacation and fishing spot for decades, Lake Simcoe continues to produce record amounts of fish on a yearly basis. Blessed with the cities of Barrie and Orillia on its shores Simcoe also joins with Lake Couchiching at the north end expanding one great lake into two. Popular fish species in this water system include northern pike, jumbo perch, bass and walleye. Salmon anglers have been blessed with the stocking of Lake Ontario by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the efforts of the MNR are noticed with the great fishing in the Credit river, the Grand river and Port Credit. With its big city lights and infrastructure Southern Ontario is a special angling experience in its own.
